Our Story
After public consultation in the Crieff area, it was agreed that there is strong support for a museum, at the heart of Strathearn, to tell our important story. The Crieff & Strathearn Museum team of volunteers started to take action near the end of 2016 and formed a properly constituted charitable body later in the spring of 2017.
Over the next few years, momentum grew. We attended events and held pop-up exhibitions in local venues. Community awareness and support flourished and our archive of historic artefacts was expanding.
Successful fundraising led to the team agreeing a lease of the Old Town Hall in Crieff with Perth and Kinross Council. At last with its own premises, Crieff and Strathearn Museum was officially opened by Rory Stewart in May 2024.
Although not our primary objective, by basing the museum in the Town Hall we have repurposed and are thus helping to preserve one of the town’s historically more important vacant buildings: it is Category B listed. We have named the upstairs room the Ann McIntosh Room after our founding member and are pleased to make this space available for community use. The museum also houses ‘Santa’s Post Office’ in December.
The sentiments of the Trustees and Membership remain resolute. As the poster of our first event read, “We want to make an inspiring venue to entertain and to educate, with displays, events, virtual and augmented reality, performances, story-telling, re-enactments, tours and films — to make a truly valuable community resource.”
We were delighted to gain funding to employ a part-time manager in January 2025. This is a useful step towards ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Museum, contributing both to the wellbeing and pride of the community and the resilience of the local economy. We are grateful to the enthusiasm and support of the locals in helping us to recognise this vision.

Crieff and Strathearn Museum is committed to the Scottish Government’s Fair Work First Principles. We ensure workers receive payment of at least the Real Living Wage and have access to appropriate channels for effective voice.
